A needy girl from Gangu sub-location in West Alego won a scholarship for her senior school studies at the Jane Adeny Memorial School in Koru.

Annet Anyango was offered a full scholarship that covers three years of senior school.  She reported to the school in grade 10 on January 13.

The girl from Uhanya village beat many odds to complete her studies at Gangu Primary and Junior School.

Kennedy Gwa, her mentor, said circumstances forced the girl to use her spare time to raise money for school necessities.

She sold pieces of sugarcane on weekends to raise money for books, exam fees and other basics, Mr. Gwa said.

The Jane Adeny Memorial School, better known by its acronym JAMS, is a girls high school located in the Koru area of Muhoroni.

JAMS is a private school with fees like any other. But it also has a charitable programme that helps bright girls from low-income households to get the education they deserve, but one that their families cannot afford.

“The scholarship came in handy,” said Peter Omoro, the Gangu school headteacher. “Annet is a promising girl,” he added. Anyango has chosen the STEM pathway and dreams of becoming a biomedical engineer.

JAMS began enrolling students in 2011 and had its first KCSE class in 2014.

The Tribune reached out to the school’s founder, Professor Teresa Wasonga, who said the scholarship covers everything the girl needs at school. She added that Anyango was granted the scholarship on merit and financial need.

“We look to support children who would otherwise not go to school,” said Professor Wasonga, who is a professor of education leadership at Northern Illinois University.

The full-ride scholarship not only gives Anyango a chance to continue her education, but it also puts her in a company of girls with a shared dream of transforming their families’ fortunes.

This year, the school was overwhelmed by scholarship requests. They had 25 scholarship opportunities but received over 150 applications.
