Teachers in Siaya West chose James Mududah and Erick Olwanda as their union representatives in Knut elections last month.

In this election, teachers looked to have union leaders who would guard the gains they have already bagged and push for more. Better welfare, job security and professional development have always featured among teachers’ top demands.

Mr. Mududah won a re-election, while Mr. Olwanda is a new kid on the block. This choice shows teachers in Siaya West preferred a blend of a tried-and-true leader and a new blood in the local union office.

The duo will represent teachers from at least 36 public schools across Siaya West.

In his re-election bid, Mr. Mududah faced a challenge from Lazarus Halonda. On the other hand, Mr. Olwanda faced off against Sylvester Sidungu.

The Tribune spoke with Mr. Mududah, who mentioned bringing teachers together and improving their welfare as his focus as he returns to the office.

At the main branch level, Alex Dunga was elected the Knut Siaya branch executive secretary. He beat back opposition from Jacinta Ojuka to take the branch’s top seat.

The Knut elections were held at the Siaya Central Primary and Junior School on January 10. These elections happen every five years.
